Luis Palerm
PhD candidate, Government Department, University of Essex

UC MEXUS residency: October 2017 to June 2018

I’m a PhD candidate at the University of Essex in the Government Department under the supervision of Kristian Gleditsch and Marius Radean. My research focuses on the institutional determinants of human rights respect in democracies and autocracies.

In the hopes of improving my papers and to develop new ideas I plan to present my work in workshops and seminars in UC MEXUS and in other campuses of the University of California. By the end of my residence I plan to have published the three papers from my dissertation and I write a paper on the origins and impacts of the judicial independence reform in Mexico.
