UC MEXUS and the California-Mexico Health Initiative (CMHI) at the University of California Office of the President California Policy Research Center developed a joint initiative in 2003 to support for collaborative research on health and migration in California and Mexico. A second UC MEXUS-CMHI grants competition was offered in 2004 in partnership with the California Program on Access to Care (CPAC) of the California Policy Research Center, UC Office of the President; the Universitywide AIDS Research Program; the Secretaría de Salud (SSA); el Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT); the Fundación México-Estados Unidos para la Ciencia (FUMEC); and the California Endowment (TCE).

The primary objective of the program is to provide seed funds for developing projects in all disciplines that will enhance the understanding and knowledge of migration and health-related issues facing Mexican-origin workers and their families in California and Mexico, as well as the dissemination of information regarding these issues. A second objective is to promote new collaborative research actions and long-term linkages among the University of California campuses and Mexican research institutions. Ultimately, the program strives to create a binational network of researchers and institutions from California and Mexico who can inform policy decisions on health and migration issues.

The 2004 UC MEXUS-CMHI grants competition awarded seven grants totaling $250,891 to teams of UC and Mexican researchers for projects that addressed research and policy concerns regarding migration and health together. The Co-Principal Investigators, departments, home UC campuses and Mexican institutions, and project titles of the grant recipients are listed below.

The program is intended to support the projects of UC Riverside faculty and researchers who wish to develop collaborative research or creative activities in any discipline with colleagues at Mexican institutions of research and/or higher education. The primary objective of the program is to expand and enhance academic exchange between UCR and Mexico and provide seed funds for starting projects that will lead to the development of major, long-term, interdisciplinary research and academic activities with strong potential for extramural funding. The Principal Investigators, departments, Mexican collaborators, Mexican institutions, and project titles of the selected projects are listed below.
