with specific interests in...: Research on marine and estuarine ecotoxicology aimed at understanding how the persistence and toxicity of environmental toxicants relates with ecologically relevant alterations in coastal environments. Our laboratory infrastructure comprises analytical equipment (HPLC and GC) to determine contaminants levels in different environmental matrices (water, sediments and organisms), controlled-temperature rooms to carry out toxicological experiments, and facilities for biomarker determinations. Biomarkers are measured at different levels of biological organization: molecular, biochemical, histological, physiological and organismal. Several species have been used to assess exposure and effects of contaminants in coastal lagoons: Shrimps (Litopenaeus vannmei), crabs (Uca princeps), mussels (Mytella strigata), and mullets (Mugil curema). Additionally, as Sinaloa is predominantly agricultural, ongoing research deals with the categorization of its agricultural patterns, particularly on pesticide and land use, that can lead to evaluate their potential impacts on other processes occurring in the coastal zone.

My research area: MIGRACION Y SALUD. Estudios de corte cualitativo, narrativas de vida y entrevistas a profundidad en el Acceso y uso de los servicios de salud por parte de los trabajadores mexicanos jubilados y que han retornadon a sus comunidades mexicanas de origen, sus problemas de salud a los que enfrentan, costos, uso o no de seguridad social, pago de poliza de seguros de salud, utilización de los servicios de salud nacionales, privados, de asistencia social, entre otros, expectativas de vida, apoyo o no de parte de instancias de los E.U. tanto para su subsistencia y atención médica, todo ello tendiente a buscar información para el establecimiento de propuestas en politicas de salud binacionales, asi como de difusión entre la población migrante trabajadora en los Estados Unidos y generar modificaciones a futuro de sus expectativas. Se ha iniciado un estudio piloto en 7 comunidades de expulsión demográfica a E.U. con 18 hombres y una mujer, que trabajaron por mas de 15 años y que ahora viven aqui. Otra rea que se ha trabajado, es el impacto migratorio en salud de la esposa o pareja del trabajador que migró a los Estados Unidos legal o ilegalmente, y su repercusión en la esfera de la salud mental y estilo de vida familiar, ahora se pretende establecer la difusión del estado de la situación entre migrantes que trabajan en los E.U. y las propias mujeres de diferentes comunidades que presentan el problema, en donde se busquen y planteen alternativas de enfrentamiento por parte de las propias mujeres, p.e. grupos de autoayuda, generación de unidades productivas, aplicación de los recursos y educación de los hijos, entre otras.
