UC MEXUS Director renews commitment to teaching and research

Director
UC MEXUS
University of California Institute
for Mexico and the United States

The University of California system seeks a distinguished scholar from the U.S. or abroad to serve as director of its interdisciplinary multicampus research unit responsible for UC-Mexico programs. UC MEXUS was established in 1980 to identify, focus, and augment the resources of the ten campuses of the University as they relate to research, education, creative activity, and public service concerning Mexico and people of Mexican origin. The University seeks an individual with the creativity and vision to initiate new research programs and collaborations through UC MEXUS and strengthen existing initiatives. The majority of UC MEXUS funding for research and educational activities comes from California state funds via the UC Office of the President and from balanced shared-cost agreements with Mexico's National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT). More information on UC MEXUS is available at www.ucmexus.ucr.edu.

Candidates must have a record of distinguished scholarly achievement in an area related to the objectives of UC MEXUS and must be eligible for a senior tenured faculty appointment at the University of California, Riverside. The Director's role at UC MEXUS is to develop and guide research, education, public service, and other scholarly activities in five principal areas: Mexican studies, U.S.-Mexico relations, Latino studies, critical public policy and academic issues, and collaborative research between U.S. and Mexican scholars in all disciplines.

The Director of UC MEXUS reports to the systemwide Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies through the Vice Chancellor for Research at the Riverside campus, where the Institute resides. The Director is responsible for overseeing a $6 million+ annual budget and a current staff of twelve, including an Assistant Director and the potential to hire an Associate Director. The Director convenes an Advisory Committee consisting of scholars from UC campuses and Mexican universities. The successful candidate will establish a research office at the Casa de California, UC's new hub in Mexico City. A successful record of administrative experience in managing an active research center or program is desirable but all qualified candidates should apply. The ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of faculty, administrative, agency, corporate and foundation personnel, both in the U.S. and Mexico, is critical. Fluency in both Spanish and English and direct knowledge and experience of Mexico and its institutions are essential.
